A Novel Valentine

Sincere thanks to the stunning team at Hills of Africa Travel in the USA, for requesting an interview about my novel for their blog. This has been the catalyst for creating the website www.outofair.com – artwork by my gifted stepson:

The article will take the form of a two-post series, the first on Monday 14 February, which is Valentine’s Day. That also happens to be the day the story begins. If you’re not familiar with it, take a look at Chapter 1 to discover Gina’s Valentine surprise – not what she had in mind for her romantic dinner à deux!

Hills of Africa Travel are also the reason behind the penguin pictures on the website, because it was while documenting their magic Soul Safari 2009 that we visited Boulders Beach in Cape Town. Here’s a snippet of video we created from the encounter. If you watch closely, you will spot the camera in Dave’s hands 🙂

Global Day of Action – “Hands Across The Sand”

Here’s something special that SANCCOB are doing in Cape Town today: participating in the global Hands Across The Sand initiative.

This morning, people who care are joining hands across the sand at Blouberg Beach, wearing green and bearing placards that say “Yes” to clean energy, while doing their bit in a bid to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Rocky, SANCCOB’s endearing ambassador penguin, will be there as a living reminder of the threat of ocean-related pollution to sea birds. African Penguins have recently been reclassified as ENDANGERED, as per the IUCN Data List, with oil pollution rating as a key contributing factor in their declining numbers. Their plight features in my first novel, OUT OF AIR (see My Books).

Here are two pics of these engaging birds, which Dave took last year at Boulders Beach:

African Penguin Day

Here’s an important reminder of a previous post: if you’re lucky enough to be in Cape Town THIS WEEKEND (25 – 27 September 2009), take a trip to Simon’s Town for the Penguin Festival.

For the first time ever, penguin-lovers will celebrate the 26th September as African Penguin Day!! This is an initiative of SANCCOB international, aimed at raising awareness of this “much loved and ‘vulnerable to extinction’ species”. The opening highlight of the festival will be a beach release of some African Penguins that have been rehabilitated by SANCCOB, which will take place at 10am on the 26th – be sure not to miss it!

The beautiful Boulders Beach Lodge website: www.bouldersbeachlodge.com has more information about this special event. As they explain: “ALL proceeds raised over the weekend go to support SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds)”, so please take a look. Here’s a pic of one of the Boulders Beach residents, in case you haven’t met them yet:

On this note, sincere gratitude and congratulations to everyone involved in the salvage operation of the Se Li bulk carrier, which ran aground at Table View beach earlier this month. As reported on News24 on Sunday, “the threat of “significant” (oil) spillage…has passed”, despite difficult weather conditions. In case you missed the Carte Blanche article on this, which clearly outlines the extent of the threat, here’s a link to it: Shipwreck.

SMS…SOS

If you’re in South Africa, here’s a good deed for the day: SMS ‘SAVE’ to 39991 – it costs R10, which will feed a penguin for a day…even better, tell a friend, or many 🙂

Also, if you’re lucky enough to be in Cape Town on 26th September, take a trip to Simon’s Town for the Penguin Festival. More info at the beautiful Boulders Beach Lodge website: www.bouldersbeachlodge.com.

Here’s a pic of someone who’s friend you might help 🙂
