Quotes to consider:

“Pain is weakness leaving the body.” – US Marines, as quoted (frequently :-D) by Dave, who has broken over 60 bones in his 54 years, mostly due to motorbike racing

“Wisdom is nothing more than healed pain.” – Robert Gary Lee

“We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey.” – Kenji Miyazawa

“Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.” – Kahlil Gibran, ‘The Prophet

“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” – Unknown

“The pain passes, but the beauty remains.” – Pierre-Auguste Renoir

On a personal note, it’s almost two weeks since Dave’s double spinal fusion and he’s recovering really well. After a challenging weekend with intense pain down his right leg and into his foot (the one that was going numb before the operation), he had a localized cortisone injection yesterday. It’s brought huge relief and the sparkle back to his eyes.

Ouch! Although – I’m sure the relief is worth it.

    And – 60 broken bones – wow!!!!!

  2. Pat says:

Thanks for sharing this helps when I’m hurting.
    😀 😀

  3. nrhatch says:

Glad that Dave’s recovering well and that the cortisone shot gave him some much needed relief and returned the sparkle to his eyes.

  4. Oh geez!!!!!!!!! Now I am in pain! honestly I can’t believe they use staples. They look far worse than stitches. Oh my goodness I hope everything heals beautifully. Hugs to you both.

    • Naomi says:

Thanks a ton, Linda…and sorry for the gory pic! The staples are pretty hard-core, with their own staple remover – I’ve never seen them before either. Big hug back to you 🙂

  5. Pain is a very necessary part of life, and probably the least welcome! But if we did not have that messenger we might never know we were falling apart somewhere! 😀

Having existed in a detente with pain for the past many years I learned something from one of my doctors (actually, this one was an idiot, but these words he quoted have stayed with me): “Do not ever bow down and worship at the great volcano god of pain.”

Pain is “worshipped” in a number of ways – by kow-towing to it, giving offerings, giving it “top billing” in our lives, etc. Sounds like Dave is doing a great job of divorcing himself from any relationship with that false god! Congrats! I do hope that the surgery is a resolution to his sciatic difficulties! I want to see some more of his photographs soon! 😀

All the best, and of course,
    I wish you both enough. . .

    • Naomi says:

Thanks for your fabulous comment and a great big smile, Paula 😀 Your words are most wise and I sincerely wish you some respite from pain too – along with ‘enough’ as well, xo

  6. Hugs to both of you, Naomi. Less is more today – pain and words.

  7. good luck to Dave and may his recovery be speedy and a great resuklt from the op

  8. Glad Dave’s doing better. All the best to you both 🙂

  9. Artswebshow says:

Ouch, i just dont understand stuff like that

  10. Hope Dave is continuing to recover well…and, hey, is he going for a world record with how many bones he has broken?? 😉

Ask him if the pain outweighs the pleasure he gets when carrying out his daredevil pursuits – lol 😀 (I think I know the answer).

    Chloe xx

    • Naomi says:

You’re correct about that answer, Chloe: Dave can’t wait to get back on his motorbike 😀

Thank you for your kind thoughts – and I keep telling him it’s not an enviable record, but he is who he is 😉
