Twin Anniversary and Engagement Celebration!

This is a special day for us. My twin sister Ruth was married 20 years ago today at the gorgeous Alphen Hotel in Cape Town, where she had lunch with her husband, before their party tonight. By complete chance (if there is such a thing :-)), Dave proposed to me 16 years ago today on Signal Hill, from a spot right about where this photo was taken:

TABLE BAY and ROBBEN ISLAND from SIGNAL HILL - Cape Town, South Africa

He had Table Mountain in mind, but was too impatient, or tense, to wait for the cable car queues. We weren’t aware of it then, but apparently both sites are situated on significant energy meridians. I haven’t looked into this, but true or not, it was certainly auspicious for us.  That year we celebrated with Ruth and Etienne, since dinner was already planned on their behalf. We’ll enjoy ours in Jo’burg tonight, and drink a toast to them too!

I don’t usually include pics of myself in posts, but today is unusual – and being identical twins is curious to some πŸ˜‰ – so here’s a recent one of the two of us together:

NAOMI & RUTH - by DAVE

Heart-felt thanks to my beloved husband, for asking me to marry him all those years ago, and pressing a beautiful ring into my hands – which I almost dropped down the hillside, because Dave has the most stunning blue eyes imaginable . . .

Thank you so much, Kate, I really appreciate it.

It was just such a perfect Cape Town day when Dave proposed, so this picture is quite evocative for me πŸ™‚

  7. You are both so beautiful and so identical! Happy Anniversary to Ruth and her husband and congrats to you and your husband on your special day of proposal.

Were you and your sister named after Naomi and Ruth, two great women of the Bible? The Book of Ruth is one of my favorites. Blessings to you…

    • Naomi says:

Ah, thanks Carol! So kind of you to pop in and leave a lovely comment and link to your blog. I’ll have a look soonest…

My sister was named first (born 10 minutes before me), after a very close friend. From the start, our parents wanted to call me Naomi, but were cautious of too obvious a biblical connection, so christened me Anne. However, the urge to rename me persisted, so they did, after about a year – and Anne is now my second name. As it turns out, we’ve had surprisingly few comments over the years about the bible story. I love my name and wouldn’t change a thing πŸ™‚

  8. Cindy says:

Congrats to all four of you πŸ™‚

  9. Lance says:

You two are most definitely sisters!!! And…very cool…all of this!

Happy #20 to Ruth and her man, and to you and Dave….16 years from that big question…so awesome!!!

On a side note, my wife has an identical twin sister also. I remember when we were first going out, I could NOT tell them apart on the phone (hmmmm….a very dangerous thing!!!).

    • Naomi says:

Definitely dangerous!! The same goes for us, but we’ve always valued our separate identities too much to take advantage of that πŸ˜€

Thanks so much for the wishes, on behalf of us all!

  10. Beautiful photo. I am glad that Nancy suggested I stop by and have a look. I am a twin also but not lucky enough to grown up with mine. She took ill in the incubator of all places, after we were born and had to live her life in hospitals. She passed away when were in our thirties. Her name was Brenda and I am Linda. So nice to meet you.

    • Naomi says:

Thank you so much, Linda πŸ™‚

How delightful to meet you via the lovely Nancy…your blog and photography is simply beautiful! Thank you for sharing your twin story and so sorry for your sister’s misfortunes – it is a welcome reminder to appreciate mine all the more.

    Beautiful!

    Thanks for sharing.

  12. Darling girls. Beautiful. Happy days to all of you.

    Blessings …

  13. Heart says:

How romantic Naomi!! And beauty, twice as much!! So cute! Someday you and Ruth should confuse us – by you wearing your hair short and she growing it.. Ha ha..
Loved your nostalgic and lovely rendition – can imagine what the blue eyes did to you (almost) πŸ˜‰

    • Naomi says:

      Thanks, Rachana, you sweetheart!

Believe it or not, we’ve often been confused, regardless of how differently we wore our hair. You’d be amazed at how unobservant people can be πŸ˜€ We’ve had occasions when one of us would “look right through” a person that knows the other (with hairstyles similar to now), which has led to huge offence – until the incident was resolved.

Something amusing happened in relation to me getting married. Ruth was a few months pregnant at the time and co-incidentally busy on an Ernst & Young contract at Reader’s Digest (where I had previously been working in Cape Town, but had just transferred to Johannesburg). As mentioned to Paula, we had an exceptionally short engagement period (2 months), so rumours flew around the company that I was getting married in a hurry because I was pregnant (being confused with Ruth who actually was)! We had a great laugh over that πŸ˜€

  14. Chloe says:

Such a stunning pic of you both – and congratulations to you πŸ˜€ xx
