Puppies’ First Swimming Lesson

‘Come quick! She’s in the pool!’ Merriam calls – earlier this afternoon.

EEK! MAD DASH . . . phew, Quilla’s fine, frolicking on the top step πŸ˜€ Quest hovers on the deck, nosing his sister anxiously. He’s totally unsure what to make of this. Meanwhile, I’m torn in two – the camera or the swimming costume?? Temptation wins! In I go, despite the chilly water. It’s a spectacular Jo’burg day, but still EARLY summer here.

However, the cold can’t compare to the captivating fun! Quest responds to coaxing, so the puppies launch together into their first swimming lesson. Both are cautious, preferring the security of the steps, but with support and playful urging they get into the game.  Turns out Quest is a natural, innately confident at anything new. Quilla’s her mildly haywire self, sending far more water flying than nearly necessary. But at least it works for her πŸ˜€

Within a few tries they get the drift, also grasping where the steps are located. I’m chuffed about that, although this summer seems set for loads of soggy mayhem!

No pics in the pool, but here they are afterwards, sporting the wet look:

And Tex looking on in his grandfatherly way. Swimming has never been his thing!

They seem to have passed with flying colours, Diski cried like a little girl 😦

  2. Naomi says:

Ah, poor baby! Actually, Dave’s not so pleased to hear about this, envisaging wildly wet bodies haring around the house. Perhaps it’s better when they don’t enjoy it πŸ™‚

  3. Lance says:

They sure look content after that dip in the water!! Hmm….and your talk of summer…has me missing ours!!!

  4. nrhatch says:

    How fun!

And how brave of you to dive in with them so early in the season!

    Thanks, Nome! πŸ˜‰

    • Naomi says:

      Hehe, thanks Nancy πŸ˜‰

This was brilliant fun, although I more ‘slithered’ than ‘dived’ in…couldn’t quite face freezing my head!

  5. Jamie Dedes says:

What fun … and what great pix … suppose Dave has a point and clean-up is something of a job, eh?

I just love your dogs! Thanks for posting this. Have to allert the family now …

  7. First sight of your dogs, Naomi, and what beauties! The wonderful characterful faces! Swimming is never more fun than with a dog: we used to bellyboard in the Atlantic surf with ours.

  8. Naomi says:

Awesome, Kate! If only for some seaside close by!!

  9. souldipper says:

Oh, boy, what fun. If those dogs are going to live with Naomi and Dave, they’ll be snowboarding by next winter.

  10. The last picture got me lol, funky hair style! Grandfather is on a roll~ XDXD

  11. LOL! Love these pics! How old are the pups? Grandpa manages to look a bit proud, even if he doesn’t like to swim. Guess he figures someone has to be around to effect a rescue if need be!

    • Naomi says:

What a gorgeous comment, thank you, Paula! Although I’m not sure Tex deserves that much credit πŸ˜€ The puppies are almost five months now…all ears up already πŸ™‚

  14. Your puppy is too cute and I loooove Tex! I have to show you a pic of my dog one day, Naomi. He’s part Yorkie part Grizzly Bear.
ps: I showed my daughter the pictures on your site (she’s an aspiring photographer–13 yrs old) and she was soooo impressed… as I always am. πŸ˜‰

  15. Naomi says:

Thanks so much, Lin! Would love to see a pic of your dog…he sounds amazing πŸ˜€

  16. Tammy McLeod says:

Great photos of your dogs and how fun that you jumped in with him. My pups have never been into the water – of course, our season is just winding down so we won’t be in again until May.

  17. LOL, the wet-look doesn’t do him justice.

Hey there Naomi! Long time no speak. I’m so sorry about that. I’ve been getting ready to go back to my fishing job on a boat in Alaska and packed up all of my things, including my computer, when I thought they might call me. However, I do have my phone with me and have finally bookmarked your lovely site and boy howdy am I glad that I did. I simply can’t wait to get caught up on all of your posts!

That being said, let me say how absolutely wonderful your writing is on this post. You have done it perfectly spot on and every word was delightful to read. I can’t wait to here more on the pups and their watery South African adventures for the summer!

Thanks for being patient with me Naomi and I sincerely hope you can forgive my lack of posts, replies, and comments. Thanks again for sharing your lovely country and family with all of us and I wish you the most wonderful Summer ahead!
