I believe neither can stand successfully alone, and each is critical to writing, especially a book.
If it’s not from the heart it will hardly hold the writer, much less the reader. Again, I recommend Naomi Rose, who teaches the method of ‘Writing from the Deeper Self’.
As for the head, everyone knows the value of editing…and editing…and editing. I do this as I go along, switching often between the heart and the head. Although it slows down the first draft, it gives the characters time to develop and guide the story in an intuitive way. It also allows for pacing. My creative limit is about 3 hours a day or 1500 words, partially edited. And I prefer breathers in between – most importantly, not to force anything. OUT OF AIR took a year to complete, including a substantial rewrite, but each to their own.
Roccie Hill (author of acclaimed THREE MINUTES ON LOVE) took 13 – 14 years to finish her first book. She spoke eloquently about the “Odyssey of the First Novel” on the 2008 Writer’s Telesummit. An odyssey indeed, and one to be savoured

Hi again Naomi
My daughter has just heard that she has a publisher for her first novel. I like to think that she gets her literary talent from me (heart and head) but I guess it’s all her own.
I’ll pass on the information in your post though… I’m sure she still has lots to learn.
Hi Alan,
Thanks so much for visiting again and for sharing news of your daughter’s book. How exciting…please pass on big congratulations on this major milestone!!! I still await news from my publisher of choice, so am a step behind!
I’m sure you must have some influence in her talent
What is her book about, and called? I guess it will be published first in the UK (?) but please keep us posted on when it will become available…also on the net/to us in SA! Via Twitter, I came across some interesting info for writers, at http://www.thecreativepenn.com and http://www.author2zero.com, both sites by Joanna Penn, which elaborate on e-marketing especially. The opportunities presented by this whole internet explosion are quite mind-boggling…
Thanks again & have a fabulous rest of the day!
Naomi
